What is Pilotage?
A pilot at the bridge
Pilotage is an activity based on local knowledge of specific characteristics of the area in which it is performed, such as coast lines, bays, ports, estuaries, lakes, rivers, terminals and channels where shipping is carried out. The main reason for this occupation to exist is the assurance of efficiency and safety on navigation, besides the protection of the environment.
Pilots are the professionals who perform this activity. They are highly experienced and have solid technical knowledge about navigation and vessel manoeuvring, not to mention their expertise on local features.
Pilotage services are delivered on board of vessels. Pilots are transferred to these vessels in pilot boats, with specially designed features for his/her safe boarding.
